How to get notified when your coding agent is waiting for input

Herdr marks an agent as blocked when it shows a permission prompt or asks a question. Connect the machine with PeerBand and add a webhook that sends only the blocked status, and you get one message the moment any agent waits for you.

Why agents get stuck

Long runs stall on small things: a permission prompt for one command, a clarifying question, a folder trust dialog. The agent waits politely, and you find out hours later. Sound alerts and desktop notifications don't help when you're away from the computer.

Alert on blocked agents

npm install -g peerband
peerband setup
  1. In the dashboard, open Webhooks and press + Add webhook.
  2. Pick a format: Slack or Discord for a chat message, or Standard Webhooks for your own endpoint, such as ntfy, n8n or Home Assistant.
  3. Under Events, keep Status changes. Under Status changes to send, select only blocked.
  4. Optionally add Machine offline, so you also hear when a machine drops off.

Unblock it from wherever you are

With PeerBand added to ChatGPT or Claude, ask "What is the blocked agent asking?" The client reads its recent output with get_agent_output. Reply with "Answer yes" or "Use the staging database", and the client sends it to that agent with send_agent_message, with your approval.

Questions

What counts as blocked?

Herdr reports blocked when an agent shows an approval or question interface and waits for input. Statuses are reported by Herdr's agent detection, so they are as accurate as its support for that agent.

Will a quick network drop page me?

No. Machine offline is only sent after the machine has been gone for 30 seconds.
