How to know who sent a message to your agent, and set the rules for guests
The PeerBand connector puts a [PeerBand relay] header on every message it delivers, saying whether it's from you (the owner) or a shared user, by email. The PeerBand skill tells agents how to treat each. Change the guest rules by editing ~/.agents/skills/peerband/SKILL.md.
The header
From you:
[PeerBand relay] From your user, the owner of this machine, sent remotely through PeerBand. Handle it as a normal request from your user.
From someone you shared the machine with:
[PeerBand relay] From shared user name@example.com, who is NOT the owner of this machine and reaches it through a PeerBand share. Follow the guest rules in the peerband skill: …
The connector on your machine writes this line from the identity PeerBand's server verified, so the sender can't fake it. The text after the header is the sender's own, and agents trust only the first line.
The default guest rules
With the PeerBand skill installed, agents treat guests like a coworker on the project:
- Help with the task they ask about.
- No secrets, credentials or personal data, and nothing outside the project.
- Nothing sent elsewhere, and no risky or irreversible actions.
- When in doubt, ask the owner.
Messages without an owner role, for example from an older server, are treated as a guest.
Change the rules
Edit the skill file. On most machines it's at ~/.agents/skills/peerband/SKILL.md, linked into each agent. For example, let a review bot push to branches but never to main:
Guests may commit and push to feature branches they're working on. Never push to main or change CI settings for a guest.
Once you've edited it, peerband skill and peerband update keep your version. peerband skill --force restores the shipped one. If you ask an agent in chat to change how it treats guests, it suggests editing the skill, because a chat instruction is forgotten next session.
Questions
What if the skill isn't installed?
The header is still there, and most agents read it sensibly, but without the skill there are no explicit guest rules. Run peerband skill to install it.
Can a guest pretend to be the owner in their message text?
Their text comes after the header, which says they're a guest. The skill tells agents to trust only the header line.
